Most politicians, big business and its supporting economists call for growth as a solution to all our problems. Apparently, they believe in perpetual growth, which is a mathematical absurdity on a finite planet. There must be limits. Science is demonstrating that human population and consumption in the United States and the world are already too large and are destroying the natural systems that support us. We must not simply stop population growth; we must turn it around.

Since 1972, NPG has been making that case. We publish scholarly studies, call attention to valuable papers, support the distribution of books that make the case, support population student education, issue periodic newsletters and the monthly NPG Journal. We do not simply identify the problems, we propose solutions.

(5/22/2013) – NPG is pleased to distribute a new paper by William B. Dickinson.  In this short, easy-to-read piece, Dickinson calls attention to those who, unfortunately, still refuse to see population growth as a serious threat to our nation and world.  We absolutely live in a world of limits and no material growth can be sustainable for the long term.  This essay was written for the Biocentric Institute, a nonprofit foundation that conducts programs and studies directed toward the enhancement of quality of life for all peoples.

(5/2/2013) – NPG Press Release on “Gang of 8” Immigration Bill (S. 744) has been picked up by over 200 national media organizations, including:  Yahoo News, San Francisco Chronicle, The Seattle Times, The Miami Herald, San Diego Union Tribune, Boston Globe, and Houston Chronicle.

(4/29/13) - NPG special advisor David Simcox has written a new NPG Footnote, analyzing the current “Gang of 8” immigration reform legislation (S. 744) being debated in Washington, DC.  NPG released an immediate national Press Release announcing the paper and expressing our concerns with this dangerous bill.

(4/24/2013) – 2013 NPG Scholarship Contest is now closed.  2013 winners will be announced by July 12, 2013.

(12/7/12) - A recent article described falling birth rates as “a big problem” for the U.S. economy.  Unfortunately, the article endorsed the “growth at any cost” mentality that NPG has battled against for 40 years!  We immediately drafted this response, outlining the catastrophic effects of population growth.  For ideas on writing your own Letter to the Editor, click here.

(11/1/12) - NPG applauds two recent pieces, both co-authored by Eric Rimmer and Andrew Ferguson, which were published in the October 2012 Journal of Population Matters.  “Total Fertility Rates (TFRs) and Avoiding Catastrophe” explores the reality that, while recognizing that population growth will lead to catastrophe, TFR is often ignored by many countries and is significantly off-set by migration.  “Consequences of High Fertility Rates Within Populationsdemonstrates that a small group of individuals with high birth rates can undermine the efforts of those lowering their fertility for the greater good.

(10/10/12) - NPG would like to commend Professor Albert A. Bartlett on his recent Letter to the Editor of the Boulder Daily Camera in Colorado.  After reading several articles on job creation, Bartlett (who recently authored the NPG Forum paper The Meaning of Sustainability, available at NPG Forum Series) submitted a letter directing the Camera’s attention to the direct relationship between population growth and job creation.  He closes his letter with the poignant question:  “How long do you suppose it will take before someone in the Congress or the Administration in Washington, DC… concludes that it’s urgent for us… to stop our country’s population growth?”  NPG applauds this advocacy of our message.  Sample text for a Letter to the Editor or your local public officials can be found here.

(9/13/12) - According to CBS News, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has identified the first round of successful applicants to President Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.  From the 72,000+ applications received to date, a small group will be notified this week that they may legally remain in the U.S. for the next two years and obtain a work permit.  DHS estimates approximately 890,000 illegal immigrants are currently eligible for the program, which could cost U.S. taxpayers more than $101 million.

(8/29/12) - On August 15, 2012, federal offices across the country began receiving tens of thousands of applications from illegal immigrants wishing to participate in President Obama’s executive directive for “temporary amnesty.”  This overwhelming response is just the beginning – an estimated 1.76 million illegal immigrants under age 30 could benefit from this deferred action and work authorization program.

Our national population is already at an unsustainable level – the U.S. Census Bureau estimates that America is currently home to over 314 million people!  Evidence has shown that amnesties actually encourage more illegal immigration.  Actions like this only set a precedent that there are no consequences for total disregard of our nation’s laws.  Congress must stop this backdoor amnesty and protect the value of American citizenship!

That is precisely why your immediate, generous tax-deductible contribution of $10, $15, $20 or more is so important!  NPG is creating powerful national advertisements and issued a press release addressing this urgent issue which was picked up by several hundred media outlets across the country including Yahoo Politics!, San Francisco Chronicle and Miami Herald. Your support today helps fund these projects – together we can reach millions of Americans with our important message.
