In Current Immigration Reform Proposals, Congress Ignores US Population Growth

Alexandria, VA (April 29, 2013) – With the recent draft release of the Senate’s immigration reform bill, Negative Population Growth (NPG) President Donald Mann finds great concern with SB 744 and its effects on U.S. population size and growth.

In a new NPG publication, Mann’s organization comments that it “believes that this bill, as drafted, would be a major, transformative act of population policy, boosting U.S. population growth for decades to come.  We emphatically oppose it,” the paper states.  NPG adds:  “The language of the bill and the selection of hearing witnesses show that population stability is of no concern to the bill’s authors.”

Despite all evidence to the contrary, the White House stated in opening hearings that “in the absence of immigration, the population of the U.S. will decline and the size of its economy will contract.”  NPG observes:  “This is perhaps the broadest assertion to date of the administration’s faith in the myth of perpetual growth.”  As proven by prior amnesties, NPG warns that this bill “would stimulate further immigration, as in 1986, by massive fraud, re-admissions of previously deported people, and, after some years, follow-on family reunification.”
The publication reflects on numerous provisions of the bill which would significantly increase U.S. population size.  NPG notes:  “the bill’s proposal to end current limits on family reunification for green card holders is a serious population accelerator and must be rejected.”  Mann and his organization also find folly in the bill’s reliance on “internal enforcement” of the immigration system, stating the proposals “are innovative, but lack credibility.”

Overall, NPG sees hope that the illegal immigration crisis is one the U.S. has the capacity to solve:  “With the requisite political will, serious deterrence of illegal immigration is attainable under existing U.S. laws.”  However, NPG cautions that elected officials should consider the views of existing citizens when drafting this legislation:  “By their demographic behavior, Americans are voting for smaller families, conservation of resources and less population growth.”
