NPG Releases Precepts of New Campaign: 10 Principles for a Responsible U.S. Population Policy

Sees pending executive action as dangerous threat to population restraint, releases new policy document.

Alexandria, VA (August 20, 2014) – After Congress recessed without an answer for America’s ongoing immigration crisis, President Obama promised on August 6th that he won’t be “standing around twiddling [his] thumbs.”  With more executive action expected in the coming weeks, Negative Population Growth (NPG) announced the release of its 10 Principles for a Responsible U.S. Population Policy on August 21st.  The policy is part of NPG’s new national campaign, which highlights the need for responsible American population and immigration policies.

NPG President Donald Mann stated:  “Conservative Census Bureau projections show that U.S. population, now over 318 million, will reach at least 420 million by 2060 – and we are on track to reach a half-billion people by 2100 if current trends continue.  Those numbers are simply unsustainable for our nation’s environment, economy, natural resources, and infrastructure.  We must have a new perspective on population growth if we are ever to adopt policies that work to the benefit of all Americans.”

Mann explained:  “Each of America’s problems has historically been treated as a discrete challenge.  Never before has our government – nor our citizenry – recognized the root source of so many of our difficulties:  U.S. overpopulation.  No matter which crisis you look at – unemployment, traffic, crowding in schools and hospitals, a crumbling infrastructure, dwindling fossil fuels, pollution – all of them are worsened by population growth.  Now President Obama has expressed his intention to take unilateral action that could further increase our population growth.  NPG established this list of 10 Principles as a proposed outline for an effective U.S. population policy, which we feel is the only true solution.”

In its campaign for a sustainable American future, NPG’s 10 Principles for a Responsible U.S. Population Policy will act as the cornerstone.  Mann noted:  “To elicit any positive change for our nation, we must:  grant unrestricted access to family planning resources, encourage smaller family sizes, further our advancement opportunities for women, reduce legal immigration rates, strictly enforce existing laws to halt unlawful immigration, clarify birthright citizenship, mandate the cooperation of state and local governments, enlist the activism of America’s youth, and establish a permanent National Population Commission.”

He concluded:  “To deal with overpopulation, and all of the associated challenges that Americans are facing every day, we will need serious conversations as a nation.  We must make some difficult decisions in terms of our immigration policy, our acceptance of family planning and contraception, and current tax and social assistance incentives that encourage larger family sizes.  It will require our lasting determination to address – and resolve – some serious problems to preserve a stable and satisfactory quality of life for future generations.  The only true solution to our current difficulties is to slow, halt, and eventually reverse population growth.  And we must begin this arduous task today.”
