UPDATE: Endangered Species – Another Consequence of Population Growth

On Saturday, August 1st, large crowds gathered by the Empire State Building in New York City. In response to the recent killing of Cecil the Lion in Zimbabwe – which sparked international outrage against trophy hunting and animal extinction – the Empire State Building projected large images of endangered species onto its façade.

In all of the political bantering over secure borders, sanctuary cities, and anchor babies – it’s easy to lose focus on the real reasons we should be concerned about the size of our population.

Conservation groups around the world have linked human population growth to wide-scale animal extinction. As our numbers continue to grow, we encroach further into dwindling wildlife habitat – developing more and more of their precious open spaces. There are simply fewer and fewer places where – through one method or another – these endangered animals are not at risk.

Cecil’s death was, in fact, his final act as ambassador.

He spoke for millions of animals who face extinction due to human activity.

While we can never lose sight of WHY our population continues to grow – high immigration and fertility rates – we should always remember why we care so passionately about population growth.

NPG’s efforts stem from one broad goal: to protect America’s environment, natural resources, and quality of life for future generations.

Highlighting the many endangered species across our globe serves as a strong reminder – we absolutely need a smaller U.S. and world population!
