300 Million Reasons to Worry
COMMENTARY: by NPG President Donald Mann
We've had two years since the last major elections and during that time tens of millions of words have been written about America's current immigration crisis. In addition, the politicians have given countless speeches about what they are going to do about it. Now it's time for the voters to speak.
A new survey by the Center for Immigration Studies says that immigration issues are going to be a factor in a number of key races but that is certainly not enough. Throughout this year's elections, far too many politicians are getting away with non-committal answers to direct immigration questions while others are only offering platitudes to appease their audiences. Let's hope that if Congress cannot find the courage to resolve this issue in the next two years that immigration becomes a much more dominant force in the 2008 elections especially when voters cast a ballot for a president who singularly can exert the real leadership and power we need to enforce our borders.
One thing to look out for on election night are the talking heads who will immediately jump to instant conclusions if some strong immigration enforcement advocates take a beating at the polls. Remember, many in the media have their own agenda on the immigration issue and it is not the same as ours. The true impact of the immigration issue will not truly be known until many weeks from now after a thorough analysis of exit polling and voting tallies.
On another note, we've repeatedly said in recent months that the U.S. reaching a population level of 300 million is nothing to celebrate and it certainly isn't. However, true to the old adage that "In every cloud, there's a silver lining" the massive amount of publicity that focused on our nation's population during the past months can only prove to be a boost to NPG.
While a number of news stories that heralded the 300 millionth American on October 17th totally missed the mark as to how unchecked, spiraling population poses a real danger to America, the bulk of the news stories were balanced. Most reports did highlight the real concerns of many of us who are alert to the disastrous consequences of future immigration and population growth. Most important, many of the "man on the street" quotes which were included in these news articles reflected the fact that the average person understands that there is a costly price to pay for too many people. The fact that they feel that way means that NPG's message is getting through!
IMMIGRATION AND THE 2006 ELECTIONS
Will Americans take their frustrations about immigration into the voting booth with them?
That's the key question across the land but especially in 14 tight Congressional contests (4 Senate and 10 House) that are going to go right down to the wire on November 7th.
A new poll commissioned by the Center for Immigration Studies reveals that immigration is a top issue in this year's elections and its findings show that the majority of Americans agree with most of the points presented by the polltakers. Unfortunately, what's missing from this equation is the fact that few voters know precisely where their Senators and Congressmen stand on specific immigration issues. In all, this is a very interesting poll and worth a quick review. Its timely findings are reported in a compact and concise manner. Click on Featured Stories above for the full article.
FOLLOW THE MONEY...
When it comes to pointing the finger at the enablers of the immigration invasion, look no further than the Federal Reserve.
To make it easier for U.S. banks to grab a piece of the lucrative financial pie created by millions of illegal immigrants sending tens of billions of dollars home to Mexico, the Fed has linked to Banco de Mexico which enables American banks to be part of a new funds transfer program.
Sad to say, the service is available to all, regardless of their immigration status.
The new program is touted as saving time and money for the immigrants but the bottom line is that it's not much more than a lure to draw future customers into the formal U.S. banking system.
Details of the program only highlight the uphill battle organizations like NPG and others who decry massive illegal immigration face in taking on the "big guys." And there are few bigger than the Fed. Click on Featured Stories above for the full article.
CALIFORNIA: IS THE GOLDEN STATE IN A MELTDOWN?
Like many activist groups, NPG sent out a number of Press Releases concerning America reaching 300 Million people (see below). However, few organizations are as attuned to the skyrocketing population crisis in the State of California more than Californians for Population Stabilization (CAPS). Diana Hull and her team do an extraordinary job of staying on top of population especially immigration issues and rallying Californians to speak up and demand action from federal, state and local officials before their once beautiful state is totally overrun by bulldozers and illegal immigrants. The press release CAPS issued relating to America reaching 300 million people is one of the best summaries I have seen to date of where the rest of the nation is headed if we fail to ignore today's warnings. THE DEVIL IS IN THE DETAILS
Robert Samuelson's newspaper columns are very often right on the mark. He has a great talent of using his foresight as a "heads up" to warn us about what?s on the horizon. Earlier this year he raised a very good question (which was totally ignored by Capitol Hill) when he asked just how America was going to benefit by taking in the poor, uneducated, lowest class of immigrants from countries to our south.
Upon first reading Samuelson's column about 300 million Americans, one might feel he has a "Pollyanna" view that we have nothing to worry about our nation is big and can absorb hundreds of millions more people. But in his text, Samuelson also raises many of the "red flags" that reflect NPG's dire warnings of what's ahead. In the end, Samuelson reminds us that many of our current problems could have been averted if we had acted on them earlier. That is precisely NPG's message for America today. QUOTABLE:
"At best, the type of fencing that is contemplated will serve as a speed bump that slows illegal crossers by about a minute or two."

NPG NEWS:
We have received great feedback on our "Wake Up America!" campaign full-color "It's Your Future" posters that were mailed to thousands of teachers across the nation earlier this month. Indeed, requests keep coming in for more copies so that teachers can share this unique educational tool with their colleagues and post additional copies in other areas of their schools outside the classroom.
Also, thanks to our aggressive efforts to spotlight out-of-control population growth, NPG issued two press releases which used the occasion of the 300 million population milestone to highlight the need for a National Population Policy. Major media outlets that picked up and spread our message in print and on their website included: Yahoo! Finance, WCNC.com (Channel 6 out of Charlotte, NC), Seattle Post-Intelligencer, The Seattle Times, Investors Business Daily, The Providence Journal, Creators Syndicate, The Conservative Voice, The Hill Newspaper, and Riverside Press Enterprise (CA).
Our new "Wake Up America!" bumper stickers are now available. If you want us to send you a few please call 703-370-9510 or email us at npg@npg.org. Please be sure to include your full name and address.
DON'T FORGET TO VOTE!
Remember, we critically need elected officials on the federal, state and local level who fully understand the population and immigration issues and will work with us to change the status quo. Make it a point in the next few days to double check how the candidates in your area stand on key population issues including immigration, urban sprawl, protecting the environment, etc and don't forget to cast an absentee ballot, vote early, or go to the polls in person on November 7th.
WHY THE NPG JOURNAL?
With our country just passing the milestone of 300,000,000 people, the coming months will find much of America's attention focused on our growing population. Here at NPG we are taking this historic opportunity combined with the advent of our 35th Anniversary in 2007 -- to go beyond our traditional web postings and launch this new internet-based educational publication which will be delivered every two weeks via e-mail to you and an ever-growing list of NPG members, media contacts, educators, friends and supporters.
Our purpose in launching the NPG Journal (offered free to all recipients) is to give more widespread distribution to timely news stories and articles related to population, immigration, environmental and political issues that currently affect our daily life -- or have the potential to seriously impact our future. Combined with this information, NPG President Donald Mann will offer his personal insight and commentary on individual stories, especially those that challenge, confirm and/or complement our NPG Research and Forum Papers. In all, the NPG Journal will greatly expand NPG's educational mission, reinforce the vital need for Americans to speak up on population issues, and keep our nation -- especially our elected leaders on the national, state and local level focused on taking action that can rein-in today's out-of-control population and immigration crises.
We welcome your feedback to articles posted on the NPG Journal and urge you to forward us the e-mail address of friends you think would like to receive a complimentary copy of the NPG Journal on a bi-weekly basis. Contact us at npg@npg.org. Also, please use that address to tell us if you do not wish to continue to receive this publication. Thank you.
